Nannie Waffles (Original)
Nannie’s original illustrated recipe: peel-on grated apple, oatmeal, Bisquick, and one egg separated for a lighter batter.
Original recipeYield and timing are estimates; the original card gives neither. Follow your waffle iron’s cooking guidance.
Ingredients
- 1Gala appleGrate with the peel on, as written on the card.
- ½ cupMilk
- ⅓ cupOatmealThe card calls it oatmeal; use plain oats.
- 2 tbspNeutral oil
- ½ cupBisquick Original
- 1Large eggsSeparate; beat the white and save the yolk.
Ingredient quantities scale; oven temperatures and cooking times do not. Keep batter depth and pan crowding consistent. For fractional eggs, beat and weigh.
Method
Preheat and separate
Preheat the waffle iron. Separate the egg, putting the white in a clean mixing bowl and saving the yolk.
Beat the white
Beat the egg white with a mixer until light and fluffy.
Mix the rest
Grate the Gala apple with its peel on. Mix the grated apple, milk, oatmeal, oil, Bisquick, and saved egg yolk together.
Fold in the white
Gently fold the beaten egg white into the batter, keeping as much air in it as possible.
Cook
Pour into the preheated waffle iron, using the amount recommended for the iron. Cook until golden and cooked through; timing depends on the appliance.
Serve hot
Nannie’s card suggests butter and maple syrup, peanut butter, sliced peaches, or pomegranate jelly. Toppings are optional and are not included in the batter shopping list.
Preparation & notes
- For the lightest batter, separate and beat the egg just before making the waffles.
- Using Bisquick: the mix already supplies flour, leavening, fat, and salt, plus other formulation ingredients. Use the original card’s amounts as written; do not add extra baking powder to the Bisquick version.
- Scratch substitution, for the base batch: replace ½ cup Bisquick with ½ cup all-purpose flour, ¾ tsp baking powder, ⅛ tsp salt, and 1½ tsp butter rubbed into the dry ingredients until evenly distributed. Keep the recipe’s separate 2 tbsp oil. This published baking-mix substitute is a practical adaptation, not an exact commercial-mix duplicate, and has not been tested in Nannie’s recipe.
- For the separate apple–oat–Greek-yogurt adaptation, see Nannie Waffles Austin’s Way.
Do not taste raw batter; raw flour and eggs can carry harmful bacteria. Cook the waffles through.
Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F / 32°C. Keep refrigerated food at 40°F / 4°C or colder.
Recipe & safety notes
Original quantities and separated-egg method verified against Nannie’s illustrated recipe card. Yield and timing are estimates. The optional scratch substitution is a separate, untested adaptation.
